Our free Budding Builders courses provide entry-level construction training, employability & soft skills support and progression routes into the construction industry. If you are aged 14-30, struggling with school or are currently unemployed or looking to re-skill then we can help.

This course introduces you to construction training, work experience and careers advice in a fresh way to grow your confidence, give you a qualification and increase your knowledge of the job opportunities available in construction.

How it works

Our courses are delivered in a number of ways - we'll help find the best one for you.
Our training centre in Bermondsey, London is where we offer multi-trade OCN London accredited training courses. Due to the size of the space we are able to train young people in many practical construction skills such as bricklaying, plastering, carpentry and tiling, amongst others. We can offer longer courses from our London Training Centre and also host a number of employment fairs and taster sessions.
Our mobile classroom delivers training across England and Wales offering you the opportunity to try out the different elements of construction.  Our entry-level short courses give you the opportunity to take part in sessions ranging from carpentry, tiling and plumbing to painting and decorating and health and safety.

Our community projects deliver training while giving you the chance tgain practical experience by tranforming your local area through a real construction project. For example building a new pathway and new seating areas for residents or refurbishing empty properties or community centres.

Who can join a course?

Anyone aged 14-30 in England and Wales can join a Budding Builders course. Our places are offered first to young people who are not currently in employment, education or training or who are referred to us from an agency.

Speak with your parents, teachers, careers advisor, or another person you trust about joining our courses. We work with all sorts of referral agencies (that's an organisation like a school, a youth offending team or a college, for example) and we're happy to talk to anyone about our work and the ways you can get involved.

What happens when you finish a course with us?

We will work with you to plan out the next stage on your journey. We have amazing links with the construction industry and so we are able to arrange different types of progression routes to suit you:

  • Further training - you may wish to progress to an advanced course with us
  • Work experience or placements - we can help get you some real on site experience with our Routes Into Construction project
  • Employment and Apprenticeships - we will work with our partners to support you into employment in the industry or into an apprenticeship

Our courses are accredited by The Open College Network

Case Study

  • Ian

"I had left school at 16 and wasn’t sure what I wanted to do but I knew I didn’t want to go to college or university. I found out that the Construction Youth Trust were running a course right on my local estate, just 2 minutes from where I live. I signed up and started the course a week later. We got help writing CVs, filling job applications and studying for our CSCS test which I passed. It was great getting the chance to work on an actual project and with the hard hat and hi vis I felt like a proper builder!"
