Andy Wates Bsc MBA, Chairman

Andy joined the Wates Group in 1995 having spent six years gaining experience of the construction industry with Costain Construction and John Shreeves & Partners. Formerly the Managing Director of Wates Interiors, Andy was appointed to the Wates Group Board in May 2011 and he is also a member of the Remuneration Committee. He is Chairman of both the Wates Family Enterprise Trust and the Wates Foundation. Andy chairs the Wates Investment Partnership, which is the family’s long term investment portfolio outside of the Group. In 2014 Andy was appointed Chairman of Construction Youth Trust. In the same year he also joined the IFB with UCG Policy Committee. He holds an MBA from Roffey Park Business School.

John Abbott BEng (Tech) CEng MICE MCIOB

John is a Chartered Civil Engineer and a Chartered Member of the Institute of Building.  John retired from the role of Director with the London division of Kier Construction in 2017 having, at various times, been responsible for Pre-construction, Health Safety and Environment, Information Technology, Quality Assurance and a wide range of Construction Operations.  John has always had a passion for supporting young trainees and graduates within the business.

Stephen Brewer FCIOB, MAPM

As Director of Project Management for Grosvenor, Steve has a successful track record for completing complex and high profile development projects. Seconded full time to the new Defence & National Rehabilitation Centre (DNRC) project as Construction Executive, and Director of BS Stanford Limited, the operations and management company. This project will provide future clinical rehabilitation in the UK for the armed forces and the nation. Chairman of the Programme Appointments Panel for the proposed new Royal Artillery Museum and Salisbury Plain Heritage Centre in Wiltshire.

Richard Laudy LLB

Richard is a qualified lawyer working in the construction and engineering industry, dealing with advisory work and procurement strategies. He is currently the Construction Partner at Pinsent Masons, and has been with the firm since 1985.

Jane Nelson MSc

Jane Nelson has worked in the construction / building maintenance sector for 30 years. Starting her career as a trainee painter and decorator, she is now is an Executive Director of Mears Group, the largest provider of building maintenance to social housing in the country.

Mark Southwell BSc, MSc MICE MAPM

Mark is a Chartered Civil Engineer working predominately in the Rail Sector for nearly 30 years working in the client, consultant and contractor organisations. Mark joined CH2M as Rail Director Europe in January 2016.

Terry Spraggett

With 25 years experience in main contracting, Terry has worked extensively across all markets in both the private and public sector. Terry joined Mace Plus as Construction Director in May 2005 and is a member of the Mace Construction Board.

Michelle Tilley

Michelle has been in construction for 23 years managing the design and construction of large scale projects from inception through to completion. Michelle is now Director of Quality and Compliance at Associated British Ports.

Bill Meredith BA, FCA

Bill joined KPMG in 1989 and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.  He has worked with clients in the construction and infrastructure sectors for over 20 years and is currently the audit partner for a number of FTSE 250 listed clients.  

Jo Cooke ACIS, Company Secretary

Jo studied at Kensington College of Business where she qualified as a Chartered Company Secretary. She joined Construction Youth Trust as Company Secretary in 2004. Following an early career in the construction industry with Wates Group, Jo was appointed Deputy Secretary at the National Trust in 2006. There she leads the governance team with responsibility for delivering day to day secretariat services to the Board, Council, Executive Team and governance community. Jo is also responsible for overseeing the National Trust’s Council elections and is project manager for the members’ Annual General Meeting.
